It’s that time of year when the gift guides, party invites, and seasonal nostalgia are at an all-time high. Going on social media feels like one long ad experience of ribbons in hair, candle-lain tables, shiny eggplant/oxblood/burgundy (never black) polished fingers clutching martini glasses, and expensive bar soaps that seem like a good idea when you hit ‘purchase’ but you use once and then it lies gathering dust on the handmade ceramic soap holder that you realized you needed to buy as well because if you’re going to buy the $50 soap you have to have a soap holder… or something like that. Does the internet seem more immersive than ever this year? I feel like we are about to reach singularity and I can’t say that I would be too bothered by that at this point. On the other hand, I wish some one/entity/ life force/object would ‘Fight Club’- style take out the whole lot of it and maybe only leave the essential functions needed to help others and cat videos.
